Backyard Pool and Patio in Hamel

Family Friendly Outdoor Living

Spend all day outside

This active family in Hamel, MN came to Southview Design to turn their back yard into a neighborhood hub for outdoor fun. With school-aged children of their own, and plenty of visiting friends, this project had to please the young and young-at-heart. Using the existing pool as a starting point, Southview’s landscape designers created a design that incorporated several outdoor living spaces, while balancing the need for separation and supervision.

Before and after: Backyard pool with an uneven pool deck in hamel mn

Before: Uneven and degraded pool deck

Years of Minnesota weather had taken their toll on this paver pool deck. With the weeds pushing up between the cracks, it was time to say goodbye to this uneven surface.

Before and After: safe and level anchor paver pool deck

After: Flatter than a pancake for years to come

Besides looking great, a level pool deck is an essential safety feature. No one wants to trip and skin their knee or break their tooth! All Southview hardscapes are installed on a solid base of Class 5 gravel and backed with an industry-leading warranty.

multiple patios and hardscape and structures create out door living rooms

Several hardscapes work together to provide the perfect setting for a late summer day outside – from breakfast to S’mores.

Family Friendly Outdoor Living

A step down from the pool deck is a beautiful dining patio and outdoor kitchen. From raw and earthy Chilton natural stone, to stamped and scored concrete – different hardscape materials inject variety and visual interest into the landscape while defining areas by their use.

Line of sight supervision from the dining patio to the pool through native plantings

As much fun as a backyard pool can be, they can also be dangerous. That’s why as the ornamental grasses and ground covers mature they will add some color and spatial separation, but they won’t obstruct the line of sight between the dining patio and pool, making it easy to keep an eye on the little ones near the pool.

Pergola slats cast a cool shadow on the outdoor kitchen.

The Perfect Pergola

For over 3000 years, pergolas have been used to provided shelter from the harsh summer sun. Designers determine the orientation of the structure and spacing of the slats based on the angle of the sun.

Grass growing in between the stones adds a taste of wilderness to this backyard campfire. If the novelty wears off, an in-ground fire pit is easy to remove and fill in with a bit of dirt.
