Minneapolis, MN, Sept. 11, 2014 – The Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC) and KARE 11 invite the public to visit the newly rebuilt KARE 11 Backyard every Saturday in September from noon to 4 p.m. Landscape design professionals from Southview Design, who created a “northwoods” design for the Backyard will be on hand to answer questions and offer free landscaping advice.

Construction on the KARE 11 Backyard was completed in July and the station broadcasts the weather from the backyard every day. The KARE 11 Backyard is entry #11 in the Fall 2014 Parade of Homes.

“The KARE 11 Backyard is a great example of how much you can do in a small space,” said Karen Filloon, a landscape designer with Southview Design. “Visitors to the Backyard remark that it seems a much smaller space in person than on TV. But it also drives home the point that anyone can recreate this northwoods design, complete with an outdoor kitchen, water feature, and fireplace, right in their own backyard.”

Visitors to the KARE 11 backyard can try out KARE's weather “green screen” to see how they'd look on TV. A sweepstakes offers all visitors a chance to win prizes such as an iPad Mini from BATC, KARE-11 merchandise and tickets to view the KARE 11 News live, and an Adirondack chair with an ottoman and four hours of landscape planning from Southview Design.

After 30 years, KARE 11 decided it was time to renovate its iconic backyard and invited the Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC) to help.  BATC agreed, and immediately contacted its premier landscape design member, Southview Design, to become the design/build partner for the project.

Southview Design Invites Public to KARE-11 Backyard – page two

The public was invited to vote on two possible landscape designs created by Southview Design, and the majority voted for the “northwoods” design. Highlights of the “northwoods” KARE 11 backyard include a waterfall feature, fireplace made of natural stone from Montana, an outdoor kitchen, and a huge pergola constructed from beams from a 1920 barn in Wisconsin.

Southview Design planted dozens of different plants, including birch, maple, spruce and a magnolia tree to replace the one that had been in KARE 11’s backyard for 31 years. Other plants in the Backyard include aster, butterfly bush, coneflower, dogwood, grasses, hibiscus, hydrangea, sedum, viburnum, and many more plants that were selected by Southview Design landscape experts as well as KARE 11 chief meteorologist Belinda Jensen.
