This Mendota Heights back yard has hosted more than its fair share of pool parties, birthday, and charity dinners. It’s no surprise, the back yard was designed specifically for this family's socially active lifestyle. With multiple gathering spaces, a flexible patio, and a pool, the backyard for entertaining is this home’s best asset.
Because this back yard was intended to be the setting for many parties and gatherings, it was important to create a flexible open space. The paver patio is perfectly flat; no wobbling tables or chairs here.
Before: Weathered and exposed deck was ready to be replaced
After: Unmatched backyard for entertaining
While the homeowners dreamed of hosting black tie receptions and Memorial Day BBQs in their backyard, their small deck and unfinished yard were not adequate for entertaining large groups or events.
Today, name an amenity and you are likely to find it. Hot tub? Yes. An expansive patio with space for extra tables and chairs? Check. A swimming pool? Got it. Outdoor spaces for creating treasured memories? You bet.
Our Design-Build Process
We worked with a builder and architect to craft this outdoor living room. Located right off the family room, this cozy space is the perfect place to spend a summer morning or fall afternoon.
Outdoor living room with cozy decorations and ceiling fan
The wide pool deck has plenty of space for deck chairs and a patio table. A red concrete border gently calls attention to the edge of the water. The laminar jets create water sprays into the pool – a water feature all by itself – that also gently cools sunbathers with mist.
To protect the trees, much of the existing grade had to be saved and a few areas were leveled to create outdoor living spaces. Careful consideration was given to making sure the drainage around the pool deck was sufficient. Deco-drains and drain tile solved the issue.

Expanded side door entrance with matching pergola
Front porch was expanded, paver patio and paver front walk were added to the front yard to create a quiet escape from the busy backyard.
This full sun garden is perfect for flowers and vegetables. Styled to match the house, this shed houses a garden tractor and tools, but someday could be repurposed into a poolside changing room for guests.
Your perfect outdoor living space begins with a simple conversation. Let’s talk about your outdoor living space!

A backyard for the young and young-at-heart. This design incorporates a pool, outdoor kitchen, fire pit, pergola, natural stone, and multiple patios.
Designers and crews had to carve out a portion of a hill to create a level space for a swimming pool and hot tub in this backyard.
Expansive views and dramatic landscape design include an Infinity swimming pool, fire features, an outdoor kitchen, and a hot tub.
