The designer on this project created a casual, comfortable, and unbelievably fun outdoor living space for this Hastings MN family. An infinity-edge (aka vanishing edge) pool, a hot tub, an outdoor kitchen, a wet bar area under the deck, a cabana with fireplace and drop-down screens, a fire pit (gas) patio, a drop-down movie screen, and an audio system that covers the back yard - all add up to resort-like fun in the sun! What more could anyone want?!
Before: A large property with huge potential, overlooking the river.
After: Outdoor living space "fully loaded" with amenities.
The family’s wish list was extensive but clearly directed toward providing a fun place for entertaining. The downstairs family room opens to the under-the-deck bar area. The fire pit end of the "resort" caters to the kids with a movie screen, hammocks, and a cool audio system for playing great tunes. The cabana area is a comfortably furnished living space with fireplace for the adults. A large-screen TV mounted over the fireplace makes it the perfect spot for Sunday afternoon football in the fall.
Our Design-Build Process
Side-to-Side, the Fire Pit is 6 Feet in Diameter
Three natural stone materials define the different living spaces: the pool deck is Olympic stone; the fire pit patio is Mahogany stone; and the flooring in the cabana and outdoor bar is Travertine. The masonry columns are a unifying design element.
The Hot Tub Fits 6-8 People and Used During Minnesota Winters
The hot tub, which is finished in stone veneer, is a focal point of the design and a favorite hangout. The swimming pool and hot tub systems are separate, allowing the family to use the hot tub in winter.
Bar Area is Just Under the Deck - Note the Ceiling
The deck was replaced with maintenance-free decking. The bar area is tucked underneath. Space under deck is now a comfortable bar with beverage cooler, sink, and TV. Two TVs = two games going at once. Okay, maybe a game and a movie...either way a crowd-pleaser!
Comfort in the Cabana
The cabana has drop down screens to protect family and guests from mosquitoes and bugs. Soffit detail hides lighting for a wash across the ceilings in both the cabana and outdoor bar creating a softer lighting effect.
The Audio-Video-Lighting System is Controlled by Wireless Remote
Just Around the Corner from the Bar Area - Stone/Stucco on the Grill Matches the Home Exterior.
Boulder Wall Creates a Level Space for the Swimming Pool and Other Elements
These boulder walls were engineered to create level space for the swimming pool. We reused boulders from the old walls. Both the upper and lower walls are 4 feet in height. Shrubs and other plantings were chosen based on what the mature height was expected to be. This was done to create a feeling of openness around the pool.
