Small Backyard Swimming Pool Design

This active family approached Southview during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The beaches and parks were closed, and they desired somewhere fun and safe to spend time together outdoors. The client’s expressed interest in a backyard swimming pool but were doubtful one would fit in their small Minneapolis backyard. With a little creativity, Southview was able to bring the client's vision to life.

Project Challenges

The size of the backyard, and the homes proximity to Lake Bde Maka Ska presented many challenges for the designer and crews. Equipment access was tight and to accommodate the swimming pool, the main power lines needed to be relocated. The homes vicinity to the lake meant that drainage was of top priority. Site drainage was controlled with the use of specialty soils and a rain garden.

Slide to reveal the before and after

The original space was bland and uninviting. The new backyard, which features a swimming pool and intimate paver patio, is both welcoming and charming.

The Details

The swimming pool is the focal point of the new backyard design. It features a simple concrete pool deck with ‘Blue Select’ thermal pool coping and a Bluestone water feature. The sound of splashing water adds a sense of serenity and helps minimize the surrounding city noise. Dakota Pinnacle trees add privacy, texture and a pop of color.

Southview recycled the original backyard pavers and installed a new permeable patio off the back door. The permeable patio prevents water runoff and assists with site drainage by directing water back into the ground.

Another Happy Customer

The homeowners are thrilled with their new backyard. During the summer, the kids spend most of their free time in the pool.
