Seat walls, built with modular block or natural stone, are a simple way to include additional seating around a fire pit or water feature, or on the edge of a patio or outdoor living space.
Seat walls are low with an average height of 18”. The top of the wall (seat) should be a minimum of 12” wide. Although usually free-standing, these seat walls can also be used to retain soil in a plant bed or create an elevation change.
Seated on the wall, it’s easier to reach the vegetables or flowers. In recent years at senior-assisted living facilities and community gardens, raised planter gardens are surrounded by a retaining-seat wall, giving older or infirm people the opportunity to garden. Seat walls can also be used instead of safety railings when there is an elevation change.
